In its latest issue, the French magazine Science & Vie Junior introduces the younger generation to the world of sponges. The article titled “Dans la tête d’une éponge” (i.e. Inside the head of a sponge) reveals the historical importance of sponges, for our society and daily life, but also, shows the ecological importance of sponges as filter feeders and as habitat providers for other species (playfully comparing sponges as 5-star hotels). The publication additionally dives into the anatomy of a sponge, explaining in simple terms how they feed and reproduce, as well as their different cell types and skeleton composition. It also mentions their diversity, revealing how many species have been identified so far, but also the importance of studying the molecules they produce and their applications. This feature included insights from the researchers Thierry Pérez, Joana Xavier, and Michelle Klautau, from the SponBIODIV project.
